Bank Statement for a Visa: How Much Money You Need to Show
Daily amounts by country, how many months of statements to bring and what raises questions.
What your employer confirms, what consulates look for, and a template to hand to HR.

Your visa checklist may ask for an employment letter, a NOC (no objection certificate), a no objection letter or a leave sanction letter. They all mean one thing: your employer’s signed letter, on company paper, confirming your job, salary, start date and the leave approved for your trip. This page gives you what each consulate wants it to state, a fill-in template for HR, a sample, and what the self-employed and students send instead, as of October 2026.
The letter is your employer’s written confirmation that you work there, what you earn and that you are expected back after the trip. The name changes with the consulate. Austria’s visa center in Brazil calls it a no objection letter, Germany’s missions in India a leave sanction letter, Switzerland’s embassy in India an introduction letter with a no objection statement, and the Netherlands an employer statement or certificate of employment. It is one document with a different field list at each post.
In a Schengen visa file the letter proves one thing: there is work waiting for you at home, while bank statements, insurance and bookings answer the other questions. On a business trip it also shows that the company sending you employs you.
No EU rule requires a no objection letter. The Visa Code leaves its list open, and since the 2019 amendment, Article 14(5a) lets the Commission adopt a harmonized list of supporting documents for each jurisdiction to fit local circumstances. So the paperwork for the same trip differs between Mumbai and Dublin.
The NOC becomes required where your consulate’s checklist lists it, and some visa centers publish a form for it:
Elsewhere a plain employer letter or certificate does the job. The Netherlands checklist accepts an employer statement or a certificate of employment, the Czech embassy in Amman a work certificate, Malta’s checklist for Libya an employment certificate and Germany’s Dublin embassy an employer letter or a work permit. None of those asks the employer to approve the trip, but adding the leave dates costs HR one line.
| Checklist | What the letter states | Paper, signature and age | Filed with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italy, VFS London | Full name, job position, salary, number of vacation days, company address and phone | Original on headed paper, company stamp, manager’s signature; issued within 30 days before you submit | Latest 3 months of payslips |
| Germany, Embassy Dublin | An employer letter, or a work permit | Not older than 30 days | 3 months of statements or 3 payslips, as proof of funds |
| Germany, missions in India (February 2023) | The employer approves your holiday (leave sanction letter) | Not stated | 3 months of payslips, employment contract, 3 months of statements stamped by the bank, tax return acknowledgment for 2 years or Form 16 |
| Switzerland, embassy in India | Position, length of service, a no objection statement, travel dates and purpose | Original on letterhead, signed and stamped by HR or management | 3 months of salary slips, 3 months of statements showing the salary, tax return for 2 years |
| Netherlands | Job title, contract duration and salary, or a certificate of employment | “Recent”; bring a color copy | 3 months of bank statements or payslips |
| Czech Republic, embassy in Amman | Position, salary and start date | Not stated | 6 months of statements, signed and sealed by the bank |
| Austria, VFS Brazil (official template) | Name, passport number, company, designation, joining date, monthly salary with allowances, leave dates, return-to-work date | Original signature and company stamp | Not stated on the template |
| Malta, VFS Libya | Employment certificate | Not stated | 3 months of payslips, 6 months of statements |
| UK visitor visa | Role, salary and length of employment, or start date, salary, role and company contact details | Company headed paper | Financial documents such as bank statements |
When your checklist names no fields, ask HR for these 9, which together cover every row above:
Hand this to HR with the fields you already know filled in. Delete any line your checklist does not need and keep it to 1 page.

Daniel files it with his payslips for January to March 2027, the 3 months his checklist asks for, and submits on 20 April 2027, 14 days after the letter’s date. If he also files a cover letter, 1 sentence on his job and approved leave is enough there, because the employer letter carries the detail. For a business trip, the holiday sentence becomes the purpose of the visit, and the letter says who pays for the trip.
7 steps to get the letter from HR
If HR uses its own employment certificate format, ask for the leave dates, the return date and a no objection sentence to be added. Switzerland’s checklist for India and Austria’s template for Brazil name those lines.
Consulates do not take the letter on its own. The letter states what you earn, and payslips and your bank statements show that salary arriving, so the checklists above pair the letter with one or both, usually for 3 months. The Czech embassy in Amman and Malta’s checklist for Libya want 6 months of statements.
If you apply from India, Germany’s missions also want your employment contract and an income tax return acknowledgment for the last 2 assessment years or Form 16, with bank statements stamped by the bank. Switzerland’s embassy in India wants its financial documents as originals in A4 format, with the bank’s stamp and signature.
Germany’s missions in India accept documents in German or English and treat anything else without a proper translation as “missing”. For the UK, a document not in English or Welsh needs a full translation with the translator’s confirmation that it is accurate, the date, the translator’s full name and signature, and their contact details.
Nobody can issue a no objection letter to themselves, and the checklists do not ask you to. They want proof that the business exists and pays you:
The accountant letter is the nearest thing to an employer letter. Italy’s London checklist wants it to give the accountant’s full name, contact details, position and UK registration number, and the annual salary you draw from the company.
This is an invented sample. The firm, people and numbers are not real.

A student’s version of the employer letter comes from the school or university:
When your parents pay for the trip, their sponsorship letter covers the money. Italy’s London checklist accepts parents as sponsors for applicants under 21, and then wants the sponsor’s job letter and last 3 payslips as well.
The UK lists documents you may want to provide rather than a fixed checklist. Its guide to supporting documents, updated 8 October 2026, names an employer letter twice in its section on personal circumstances.
As evidence of your circumstances at home, it suggests a letter on company headed paper detailing your role, salary and length of employment. As proof of earnings, it suggests one confirming your start date, salary, role and the company’s contact details. One letter can carry all of that.
If you visit to work with colleagues based in the UK, gov.uk asks for a letter from your employer confirming it, and, if you will work with clients, confirming that this is not the main purpose of your visit. It also asks for digital images taken of the original documents, not of copies, wherever possible, so scan the signed and stamped letter itself.
A NOC, or no objection letter, is a letter from your employer confirming your job and salary and that it has no objection to your trip. It usually names your approved leave and the date you return to work, and HR or a manager signs and stamps it. Germany's missions in India call it a leave sanction letter.
Not under EU law, and not at every consulate. Switzerland's embassy in India asks for a no objection statement and Germany's missions in India for a leave sanction letter, while the Netherlands accepts an employer statement or a certificate of employment without one. The checklist of the consulate where you apply decides.
At most 30 days for Italy in London and Germany in Dublin, while the Netherlands asks for a recent one. Italy's London checklist counts the 30 days back from the day you submit, and Germany's Dublin embassy takes a letter not older than 30 days. A letter dated about 2 weeks before your appointment meets all 3.
No, send proof of the business instead. Italy's London checklist asks for a certificate of incorporation, 3 months of business bank statements, your latest tax return and a letter from your accountant. Germany's Dublin embassy asks for your company's registration certificate.
Ask for a certificate of employment that states your job title, salary and start date, which the Netherlands and the Czech embassy in Amman accept. Where the checklist names a leave approval or a no objection statement, as Germany's and Switzerland's missions in India do, a file without one is missing a listed document.
Not where the consulate asks for the original: Switzerland's embassy in India wants it on letterhead, signed and stamped, and Austria's template calls for an original signature and company stamp. The Netherlands asks you to bring a color copy. For the UK, gov.uk wants digital images taken of the original, not of a copy, wherever possible.
It needs to be in a language the consulate accepts, or come with a translation. Germany's missions in India accept German or English and treat other documents without a proper translation as missing. For the UK, anything not in English or Welsh needs a full translation with the translator's confirmation, the date, their name, signature and contact details.
File an employer letter with your job title, salary and start date, plus your last 3 months of payslips or bank statements. If you apply from India, Germany's missions also want your employment contract and income tax return acknowledgments for 2 years or Form 16.
