A phone showing an application screen above a passport and a printed document

When an airline or a border officer asks how you will leave the country, an onward ticket service gives you an exit flight to show without buying one: it books a temporary reservation in your name and sends a PDF with a booking reference. We checked 11 services on their own pages and listed 5, compared on price, what the PDF shows, airline-site lookup, delivery and refunds. The order weighs what each package includes against its price.

The 5 onward ticket services compared

The table shows what each service states on its own site. Prices are for 1 traveler on a one-way reservation.

The 5 services side by side, as of October 2026
Service One-way price, 1 traveler What the PDF carries Look up on the airline’s site Delivery, as stated Changes and refunds
1. Dummy-Flights.com $15; $19 round trip Booking reference for a flight you pick from a live search Yes, per the site PDF by email No changes after booking; no refund if your plans change
2. onwardfly.com $16.99 for 48 hours; $9.99 for 24 hours Booking reference plus an e-ticket number per passenger, by email Not stated Minutes, 08:00 to 23:00 GMT+7 Typo fixes only; refunds for the service’s own failures
3. onwardticket.com $16; return +$9 Booking reference made by a registered travel agency; no e-ticket number Yes, per the site 2 minutes by email Changes generally need a paid add-on; no refund after booking
4. dummyticket247.com $14 on the form; headlines say $12 and $14 Booking reference on a PDF, flight chosen by you Yes, per the site Instant download plus an email copy Unlimited date revisions; money back with evidence
5. toponwardticket.com $12; return +$6 Booking reference issued under your name Yes, per the site 5 to 60 minutes, 7AM to 11:30PM GMT+7 Refund before the booking is made; generally none once delivered

All 5 say their document carries a real booking reference. They differ on price, delivery speed and what happens when a date or a name needs to change.

What an onward ticket PDF should show

The PDF is a printout of a reservation, and whoever checks it can confirm only what the airline’s system shows. Look at 4 fields: the passenger name, the booking reference, the flight with its date, and the booking status. Some services add an e-ticket number: onwardfly.com includes one for each passenger, while onwardticket.com says its PDF has none.

The same kind of PDF also turns up in visa files. The Netherlands tells Schengen applicants in India that they need a reservation in their name for travel to and from the Schengen area and do not need a paid ticket, but what counts as a flight reservation for a visa differs by consulate.

Worked exampleSample case: checking an onward reservation before a one-way flight

This is a sample case with invented details. Maria Elena Santos flies one-way from Lisbon to Bangkok on 12 November 2026. The evening before, she orders an onward reservation from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur for 26 November and checks the PDF against her passport and the airline’s site.

Field on the PDF What it showed What she checked
Passenger SANTOS/MARIA ELENA MS Same spelling and order as her passport
Booking reference K7QX2M Found on the airline’s manage-booking page under SANTOS
Flight and date Bangkok (BKK) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL), 26 Nov 2026, 09:40 Inside the stay she plans
Status Confirmed Still showing on the airline’s site at check-in
Issued 11 Nov 2026, 19:05 Ordered the evening before, so the hold covered check-in

1. Dummy-Flights.com

One option for a checkable reservation at a set price is Dummy-Flights.com: $15 for a one-way reservation or $19 for a round trip, with a booking reference you can look up on the airline’s site and the PDF sent by email.

The flight on the document is your choice. You pick the exact flight from a live search before paying, so the route, date and departure time on the PDF are the ones you selected. A check-in agent types the booking reference into the airline’s system, and you can run the same lookup on the airline’s site before you leave.

The $19 round trip covers a check that asks for travel out and back, and the $15 one-way covers a single onward leg.

The catch: there are no changes after booking, and no refund if your plans change, so settle the date before you pay. The airline decides how long the reservation stays live, and the confirmation shows the exact expiry time.

Best for: travelers who want to choose the exact flight themselves, one-way or round trip.

2. onwardfly.com

onwardfly.com rents reservations by the clock: $9.99 for 24 hours or $16.99 for 48 hours, counted from delivery, after which the booking is cancelled automatically.

The document is an e-ticket email showing a confirmed booking status, a booking reference (PNR) and an e-ticket number for each passenger, with a copy to download from the site’s My Booking page. It is issued in your name, and the site will correct a typo after delivery but does not allow a full name change, so type the name exactly as it reads in your passport.

Orders placed between 08:00 and 23:00 GMT+7 arrive within minutes, the site says. Outside those hours, a $1.99 scheduled delivery sets the exact time the ticket arrives and the rental clock starts. Payment runs through PayPal, which also takes cards as a guest checkout, and refunds cover only the service’s own failures, such as late or missing delivery.

The catch: the 48-hour reservation costs $16.99, the highest price on this list, and fast delivery depends on its office hours unless you pay to schedule it.

Best for: a single check you can time to the hour, where the 24-hour reservation at $9.99 is enough.

3. onwardticket.com

onwardticket.com charges $16 for a one-way reservation. A return adds $9, a direct-flight option adds $2, and $1 lets you receive the ticket later, with activation open until 10 days before the departure date.

The site says a registered travel agency makes the reservation, and the PDF itinerary with its booking reference comes by email and as a download, ready to verify on the airline’s site. No e-ticket number is included. The hold lasts at least 48 hours before the booking is cancelled automatically, delivery is quoted at 2 minutes by email, and payment is by major card or PayPal. Its checkout lists a $17 option labeled “Valid 14 days” while its FAQ says validity cannot be extended, so confirm with support before paying for it.

The catch: the base price is $16, changes generally need the paid Flexible Reservation add-on, and a booking cannot be cancelled or refunded once made.

Best for: a reservation in your inbox within minutes, with a return or direct-flight option at checkout.

4. dummyticket247.com

dummyticket247.com shows $14 on its booking form, while headlines on the same page say “From $12” and “From $14” and the footer says “starting at just $12”. A return adds $7, and the standard 48-hour hold can be stretched to 7 days for $7 more or 14 days for $10 more; $1 schedules the ticket for later. One form covers up to 10 passengers.

You choose the flight yourself, including departure time, airline and transit airports, and the PDF is ready to download right after checkout, with a copy by email. The site says its booking reference can be checked on the airline’s official website. Date revisions are unlimited, and the money-back terms ask you to email evidence that the ticket did not meet your needs. Payment is by Visa or MasterCard through Stripe, or by PayPal.

The catch: the page quotes 2 different prices for the same ticket.

Best for: a hold of 7 or 14 days, or a group booking on one form.

5. toponwardticket.com

toponwardticket.com charges $12 for a one-way reservation and $6 more for a return. The site says the booking lasts 48+ hours, and its disclaimer puts the usual range at 24 hours to 7 days.

The document is a PDF with a booking reference issued under your name, which the site says can be verified on airline websites. After payment, its team processes the order during office hours, 7AM to 11:30PM GMT+7, with delivery by email quoted at 5 to 60 minutes; its terms say orders outside those hours may take 2 to 8 hours. You can schedule delivery for a later date, the departure date has to be at least 2 days after booking, and payment is by PayPal or by card through PayPal with no account needed. Refunds are possible before the reservation is created, and generally not once it has been delivered.

The catch: orders are processed in office hours, and parts of the site are garbled: the airport list in the booking form shows stray characters after city names, and several testimonials are hard to parse.

Best for: booking a few days ahead and scheduling delivery for the day you fly.

How to check an onward ticket before you use it

A booking reference helps only if the airline can find it under your name, so run this check when the PDF arrives and again on the day you show it. The name and dates also have to match the other documents you travel with, from the passport to any visa or entry authorization.

Check the reservation on the airline's site

  1. Find the airline named on the PDF and open its own website, not a third-party booking site.
  2. Open the manage-booking or my-trips page and enter the booking reference and your last name exactly as printed on the PDF.
  3. Compare what the airline shows with the PDF: name, route, flight number, date and time.
  4. Compare the name with your passport, letter for letter, including any middle names the PDF shows.
  5. Note when the hold ends, if the PDF or the seller states it, and plan to show the document before then.
  6. Contact the seller straight away if the booking does not appear or a detail is wrong, and ask for a fix while the hold is still live.

Onward ticket alternatives: a refundable fare or the US 24-hour rule

A service is not the only way to show you will leave the country: a real booking made with the airline does the same job, as long as you can cancel it cheaply afterwards. The difference is cost and timing.

A refundable fare, cancelled after you arrive

Book a fully refundable fare on the onward flight, show it at check-in and at the border, then cancel it. You pay the full fare up front and get it back under that fare’s own rules. Refund terms differ by fare, so read the fare rules before you book, and expect your money to be tied up until the refund lands.

The US 24-hour rule

US rules give you a free window on many real bookings, as long as the airline and the route are covered.

The airline chooses whether it offers the free hold or the free cancellation, and with the cancellation version you pay the full fare first and wait for the refund. The 24 hours run from the moment you book, so book within a day of the check and cancel before the window closes. An onward flight between 2 cities outside the US on a foreign airline, Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur for example, is not covered.

A cheap real ticket on the onward route is the last option: you either fly it or lose the fare.

3 ways to show an onward booking
Option Paid up front Money back Main catch
Reservation from a service $9.99 to $16.99 on this list Rarely once issued; terms differ by service The hold expires; longer holds cost extra where offered
Refundable fare, cancelled later The full fare Under that fare’s rules Money tied up until the refund arrives
US 24-hour hold or cancellation Nothing with a hold; the full fare with a cancellation All of it, if cancelled within 24 hours Book at least 7 days ahead; foreign airlines only on US flights

Frequently asked questions

What is the best onward ticket service?

On this list, Dummy-Flights.com ranks first: $15 one-way or $19 round trip, for a flight you pick from a live search before paying, with a booking reference you can look up on the airline's site. The others suit narrower needs: onwardfly.com rents a reservation for 24 hours at $9.99, and dummyticket247.com sells 7-day and 14-day holds for extra.

How much does an onward ticket cost?

Across the 5 services here, a one-way reservation for 1 traveler costs $9.99 to $16.99. A return adds $6 at toponwardticket.com, $7 at dummyticket247.com and $9 at onwardticket.com. Longer holds and scheduled delivery cost extra where they are offered.

Can you rent an onward ticket for 24 hours?

Yes, onwardfly.com sells a 24-hour reservation for $9.99 and a 48-hour one for $16.99, with the clock starting at delivery. When the rental period ends, the booking is cancelled automatically. A $1.99 option schedules delivery for the exact time you need it.

How long does a rented onward ticket last?

From 24 hours to 14 days on this list, depending on the hold you buy: onwardfly.com sells 24 or 48 hours, onwardticket.com states at least 48 hours, and dummyticket247.com offers 48 hours, 7 days or 14 days. At Dummy-Flights.com the airline decides how long the reservation stays live, and the confirmation shows the exact expiry time. Order the reservation close to the day it will be checked.

Is an onward ticket a real flight ticket?

No, it is a flight reservation, not a paid ticket you can fly on. The services listed here book a seat in your name under a booking reference, and the booking is cancelled when the hold ends. dummyticket247.com states plainly that its document cannot be used for boarding.

How can I check if an onward ticket is real?

Enter the booking reference and your last name on the airline's own manage-booking page. If the airline shows the flight, the date and your name, the reservation exists; if it finds nothing, the PDF has no booking behind it. Run the check again on the day you show the document, because holds expire.

Can I get a refund on an onward ticket?

Usually not once it is issued. Dummy-Flights.com does not refund once booked if your plans change, onwardticket.com does not refund after booking, and toponwardticket.com generally refunds only before the reservation is created. onwardfly.com refunds its own failures, such as late delivery, and dummyticket247.com offers money back if you email evidence that the ticket did not meet your needs.

What name should be on an onward ticket?

Your name exactly as it appears in your passport, in the same order and spelling. Some services fix only typos after delivery: onwardfly.com corrects a typo but does not allow a full name change, so check the spelling before you pay.
